Family Class
Canadian citizens and permanent residents living in
Canada, who are 18 years of age or
older, may sponsor the following close relatives or family members
who want to become permanent residents of
Canada:
-
Spouses,
common-law or conjugal partners;
[Note: For the first time, common-law partners may now be
sponsored. The term "common-law partner" refers to a person, who
is cohabiting in a conjugal relationship with another person,
having so cohabited for a period of at least one year. Common
law partners also encompass same-sex relationships.]
-
Parents and
grandparents.
-
Dependent
children, including adopted children.
-
Children under
18 years of age whom you intend to adopt or who are under your
guardianship.
-
Brothers,
sisters, nephews, nieces or grandchildren who are orphans, under
the age of 18 years, and not married or in a common-law
relationship.
-
One relative
of any age could be sponsored if the applicant does not have an
aunt, uncle or family member from the list above
who you could be sponsored or who is
already a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or of Aboriginal
descent.
In
order to immigrate to Canada,
the close family relation must first sponsor you before you are
eligible to apply for immigration. Sponsorship is a mutual binding
agreement that the two parties must sign. In addition, sponsors must
promise, in the form of an Undertaking, to support the relative or
family member and their accompanying family members for a period of
three to ten years (depending on their age and relationship to you),
and to help them to settle in Canada.
Sponsors may also have to meet certain income requirements.
Pease
contact SCCI if you have any query relating to any aspect of a
Family category application.
